F-1 student visa checklist: everything you need in 2026

Documents, deadlines, interview prep, and SEVIS fee — the complete F-1 visa checklist for international students heading to the US.

Unigree Editorial ·

The F-1 visa is the standard route to studying full-time in the US. Here's what you need ready before your appointment.

Documents to bring

  • Valid passport (at least 6 months beyond your stay)
  • Form I-20 from your SEVP-certified school
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • SEVIS I-901 fee receipt
  • Visa appointment confirmation
  • Recent passport-sized photos meeting US specs
  • Proof of financial support (bank statements, scholarship letters, sponsor affidavits)
  • Academic transcripts, diplomas, and standardised test scores

Fees you'll pay

SEVIS I-901 fee: $350. MRV visa application fee: $185. Some nationalities also pay a reciprocity fee on issuance.

Interview prep

The consular officer wants to confirm three things: you're a genuine student, you can afford it, and you intend to return home after your studies. Practice answering: Why this university? Why this course? How will you fund it? What are your plans after graduation?

After approval

You can enter the US up to 30 days before your I-20 program start date. Keep your I-20 with you at the port of entry — not in checked luggage.
